H1N1 influenza?

10 Mar

Visited the family doctor this morning for the blood test result. Thank God that it was positive without any flu virus so I can re-start my preparation for my 2nd mission in East Timor! I was suspected to have been infected with H1N1 influenza 2 weeks ago because of flu-like symptoms that improved but then returned with fever and worse cough.

As the incubation period of the flu can be between 1 to 7 days. I have been advised to watch out for persistent fever & cough after the 10-day anti-biotic. The persistent fever & cough are symptoms of penumonia which I must seek immediate medical treatment. In view of the inadequate medical resources in Timor, church leaders advised that I should delay my return to Timor, to go only when I have fully recovered. So I cancelled the flight & spent the next 2 weeks resting & fighting the virus with anti-biotic & loads of prayer (from many many faithful intercessors, thank YOU all!).

As I looked back, God showed me His grace & purpose in many ways:

  • I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to visit a family doctor whom I had avoided for a long time due to his criticism of my faith some years back. But God has opened his heart to share his struggles and I was able to share Jesus’ love with him during these 3 consultations. I pray God’s peace into this doctor’s heart so he can turn back to God for healing, restoration, hope & love;
  • I was able to attend the Love Timor’s District Anchors’ Consultation when I walked away greatly inspired & encouraged by what God is doing in Timor;
  • I was given divine appointment with my ex-staff to help her discern God’s direction for her career;
  • I was given more time to take care of logistics;
  • I was given time to be vaccinated against H1N1; and
  • I was able to spend more time with family & share my faith more!

And God has also enabled the airline to keep my ticket open. Once I produced the doctor’s letter that certified I was unfit to travel on Mar 1, I am now able to change the date of departure at no penalty cost! How awesome is that when the flight was cancelled less than 24 hours before take-off!!!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Map to God

7 Feb
http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-maps/world-map-for-kids.html

source: http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-maps/world-map-for-kids.html

As much  as the Bible is a book of truths, it is also a map to God. As Christians, we study & debate the map yet too often fail to make the journey
                                                               - Francis Frangipane

I can never appreciate the beauty & awe of the rainbow until I see it myself. No matter how well it has been photographed or described by the most charismatic story-teller, it is just not the same to be up close & personal. This is the same for me to truly know God. I need to experience God to grasp how wide, how long, how high & how deep is His love for me.

And I thank God for taking me on a expressway since I know Him 6 years ago. Some major events during this journey has opened my heart to see God’s grace at work in me & other people.

Year 0 => One-to-one discipleship for faith foundation building

Year 1 => Baptism.

                     Holy Land Bible Study Tour

Year 2 => Missions trip to Central Asia.

                      Begin bible study with BSF.

Year 3 => Begin Missions Candidate Training.

                     Praying & preparing for OneLife.OneYear missions initiative

Year 4 => Missions trip to East Timor.

                     Committed to OneLife.OneYear East Timor missions

Year 5 => Left commercial employment.

                      Joined OneLife.OneYear East Timor missions

Year 6 => Completed OneLife.OneYear East Timor missions.

                      Missions trip to Yunan, China.

                      Partnered EEFC in leading missions team to East Timor

Year 7 => Commiting 2nd year at East Timor missions (solo without a team)

It has not been plain sailing. The journey has been saddened by grief & hurt. My heart ached from abandonment, betrayal, disappointment, unjustly accusations, lost friendships. When I am down in the valleys & suffering, God stays with me. He comforts me & restores me in His LOVE. He has never left me nor forsaken me (Heb 13:5). I will never be able to bound back on my own. I regain my strength from His abiding Word. I can stand on my feet again!

God has allowed so much trials to happen not that He enjoys seeing me in pain but because He is preparing me for something He has planned even before I was born. I do not know when God will connect all the loose ends in my life so everything makes sense. Even if He does, I may not even know it. But this is not important. I only know that He is FAITHFUL & I trust that He will deliver His promise. This is good enough for me.

Therefore, it is my prayer that every Christian will take that leap of faith to encounter God, to allow God to restore those defective parts, to be whole again. Let us not contend ourselves with studying the facts of God but pro-actively seeking the face of God. Let us not be satisfied with a religion about Christ, without the reality of Christ but to experience His power & presence. It is only then can we truly say, “I know God. This is too good to keep it to myself. I want to tell the whole world. I want to go where God is sending me. I want to be God’s ambassador of LOVE!!!”

Because of His Grace,

Gift of Giving

17 Jan

The Giving Heart

Message alert from my phone took me away from my task on hand. A good friend sent a text message, “Can I contribute $$$ to your work in East Timor? Let me know who to issue the cheque to.” Minutes later after I replied with account payee name (my church), came another message, “Cheque is ready. I will pass it to you when we meet for dinner on Thursday”.

That’s it. It’s all done in a matter of minutes. It’s not a small sum & it will go a long way in East Timor especially in helping the kids to develop reading & listening skill; creativity in art & music or simply getting milk powder for babies.  I thank God for giving this sister the gift in giving  & keeping her heart tender for those in need.

Then later in the afternoon, another sister in Christ blessed me with a red packet for the East Timor’s ministry. Both these sisters have never been to East Timor but their hearts are burdened by the needs I shared. They do not know each other but God has prompted them to give on the same day for His work in East Timor.

Suddenly, I realise God is sending these 2 angels to encourage me. There has been much happenings in the recent visit to Maubisse. I may not have realised the negative impact it has on me but God knows. He knows I need a little pat on my shoulder to lift my spirit. I thank my LORD for knowing my needs & meeting them even before I realise it. His Word assures me His plan for me is the best!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

                                                                        – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

I can feel God looking at me with a approving smile, “I love you my child. No matter what you are going through, I am always here with you. My angels will always come around you, to protect you, to meet your needs & to help you through any difficulty. So do not fear!”

Watershed in Maubisse Ministry

11 Jan

Watershed is a crucial turning point affecting action, opinion, direction and history. This word come to mind as I reflected on my recent trip back to East Timor (Dec 18th  to Jan 1st 2011). This is the first visit since R & I returned home on Aug 31st. We have been invited by Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church (EEFC) to partner them in their 1st Youth team’s missions trip to East Timor. Unfortunately R was not able to join the team due to prior commitment.

I was ecstatic at the invitation for a number of reasons:

  1. This will be the 1st partnership within the EFCS circle for the “Love East Timor” movement;
  2. It will be a great opportunity to reconnect since I came home in Aug upon completing the “One Life One Year 2009/10” missions. At the same time, it will be timely to bring the good news of church leaders approving my 2nd year missions in East Timor;
  3. The 1st Christmas & New Year away from family & friends, excited for the different experience celebrating this wonderful occasion in a land that God puts in my heart & answered prayer to share  the true meaning of Christmas in East Timor; and
  4. Most important of all, the expectancy to see & sense what God is going to do & how I can be part of His amazing work!

1st EEFC & WEFC Partnership for "LOVE EAST TIMOR" missions trip

God had bound the 11 of us in LOVE that we bonded & worked very well during the trip despite coming together within a very short time. It was 1st trip to East Timor for 8 of us but everyone did well to connect with people, friends or new acquaintances. Everyone took initiative to help one another & stepped out of their comfort zone to do many things for the very first time.

Carols at Malaysia FPU. Dili

On Christmas Day (2nd day after team arrival), we were invited to the Malaysian Federal Police Unit (FPU) Christmas dinner in Dili. Little did we expect to be asked to sing carols by the FPU commander. Team got their act together quickly & went back to the hotel to retrieve guitar & organ. R of EEFC was pleased to be able to use his piano skill to serve God as all the other entertainment for the evening was pop music. We were amazed how God had made this possible when half the contingent was Muslim & our carols were immediately after their evening prayers! Team also learnt the Sabah folk dance from the police officers & realized later that this dance session would serve them well in Maubisse.

We drove up to Maubisse on Dec 26th but it had not been easy for some, taking longer than usual with stops to rest from the winding mountainous road. As soon as we reached the junction leading to Fatubasse, mood in the cars was lifted with the cool & crisp mountain air! Everyone was in awe of the scenic Maubisse as well as friendly people who smiled & greeted us. Team (male) was able to settle in at the guest house quickly & help the 2 girls to move in with me in my house.  We thank God for His protection & provision of safe lodging.

Balloons...part of the decorations at Maubisse Referral Hospital

The next morning, we visited the Maubisse Referral Hospital & helped with the decoration for the hospital 3rd Anniversary Celebration cum Christmas dinner party to be held later in the evening. Team split up in 2 groups: blowing up balloons & cutting out alphabets. Then team got together to paste every alphabet on the wall to form the words for the party theme. Hospital staff appreciated our dedication in completing the decoration before going for lunch.

Mass to celebrate MRH 3rd Anniversary

Team returned to the hospital in the evening where mass was held to celebrate the hospital’s 3rd anniversary. After the mass, Dr H accompanied us to give out Christmas gifts to the in-patients, mainly in the maternity wards. Team also prepared gifts for hospital staff & their children. We were then ushered to the beautifully decorated training room for the celebration over champagne & a big feast!

The Feast fit for Kings!

However, team did not enjoy much of wide spread of meat dish as they witnessed the roasting of dogs in the morning. Yes, my beloved pet is a delicacy in East Timor especially on special occasions; it’s the must-have to go with drinks after the fiesta! Without label for the dishes & not knowing what meat was served, team barely touched the meat dishes, ate mainly rice & vegetables, a big regret as we learnt later that dog meat would only be served after the main feast…….

After the feast came song & dance. Team presented the song “Angels we have heard on high” which everyone was familiar with the chorus “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” & joined in with great joy! At that moment, I felt surrounded by people who love Jesus & really want to praise God for the birth of Jesus. However sadness soon enveloped my heart as I realized they did not know Jesus at all. I thank God for the affirmation of His call for me to continue His work there as much still need to be done.

Though not able to converse in Tetun, team stepped out to connect with the children at the party with photo taking & soon included them in the dance. The kids not only danced well, they seemed to have endless energy to keep going. Team soon realized the dance session at the FPU party had prepared them to blend in with the kids and the fiesta, as most had never danced in their life. All of us had a great time celebrating Christmas with the hospital community! Sometime we cannot comprehend what God is putting us through at that moment but He always has a plan & will reveal to us at His perfect timing.

Another character God reveals is His faithfulness: when we faced opposition from the new priest in Maubisse Catholic Church, God raised up agent to help us. The priest did not allow us to join the community Christmas Celebration for the Kids on Dec 30th (held at the dining hall on church compound) nor to give out the 500 gifts we had brought for the children. We had been asked by the hospital Administrator to prepare a skit & bring gifts for this celebration.

But when our friend at the hospital, M went to discuss with him just a day before the team arrived on Dec 24th, the priest did not welcome us once he knew we were protestants. It was a big disappointment as team put in much effort in the script, rehearsal, visuals as well as the elaborate hand-made costumes. But team took everything in their stride & accepted it from God’s perspective that they would accomplish much simply by trusting God to do His work & not try to control the situation with their own strength.

Indeed, I have been greatly blessed & encouraged by these first-timers who came with the right spirit, with the right motive & respond in the right manner!

Catholic Church at Maubisse

When I met (in a casual & informal setting) this new priest the morning after the hospital dinner party, he was not very friendly & spoke harshly. He saw us (our team) as disturbing the peace by teaching a new religion just like the Brazilian protestants who gave him many problems in his previous village, Aileu. He even objected to me teaching English as he felt the people were confused by the different English taught by Americans, Australians, Brazilians and Singaporeans. Though I tried to understand & clarify what he said, I did not have much success.

I have since found out that there was a direct confrontation between some Brazilian missionaries and the catholic priest and the community in Aileu sometime ago. Though details of the confrontation are not available now, it is likely that the hurts from such encounter could have resulted in his over-reaction towards me and the team.

Senor T (my landlord as well as the man of peace in Maubisse) had offered to talk to the priest to explain my presence & mission. Senor T was very kind to ask me not to be sad over what the priest said. He appreciated our visit during this Christmas bringing cheers to the patients & kids at the hospital, as well as spending time with his family & other families in the community.

It is this act of a local Timorese stepping out to help a foreign missionary voluntarily that I see as a watershed in the Maubisse ministry. God has opened Senor T’s eyes to see what He is doing & touched his hearts to show compassion. It is during difficult time like this that gives rise to event for God to show His mighty power.

As I sat & listened to the sermon at EEFC last Sunday, Ps S quoted the incidents in Maubisse during this trip. Ps S  took comfort & encouragement from Peter that opposition will come at some point when we are walking in the light, even though we may not have expected it to come so soon!

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

                                                                                  - 1 Peter 4:12 (NIV)

The road ahead in the Maubisse ministry is long & treacherous but God is faithful & sovereign. It is on this belief that I will press ahead & not waver.

With love in Singapore,

Lydia

Mestra Eskola

27 Jun

  “Ita hakarak mai eskola no ajuda hau atu hanorin ingles?”

 I was sipping the fragrant Maubisse coffee when the Mr C, vice-principal of the primary school asked this question, with a expectant look when we visited his home this morning. He was asking if we would like to help him teach English in the school.

We were pleasantly surprised by his request as we were just having a casual chat & not even talking what we liked to achieve in the next 2 months. This was the family that we were most concerned in terms of damaged relationship & had been praying for open doors to rebuild relationship before we leave in August.

As they lived opposite our temporary abode last year, they had observed much about what happened among the OLOY team members. They had also spent some time with members of the team but had some misconceptions about the reason(s) why the team broke up & left separately.

We were really thankful for their graciousness in not asking why the whole team left & then only 2 of us returned after 7 months. Instead they welcomed us back with open arms & even invited us to help teach English in the primary 6 class of 50 students. They had let the past go & focused on the present. This could only be possible because God is at work!

 By day the LORD directs his love,
   at night his song is with me—
   a prayer to the God of my life.

                                                        - Psalm 42:8 (NIV)

As I look forward to be a school teacher (mestra eskola), 3 times a week, I rejoice at God’s goodness throughout the day and night, taking care of my worries & putting joy in my life. Thank YOU Jesus, I love you!

With love from Maubisse,

Laho-boot

23 Jun

It was a welcoming change after 2 days in the hot & humid Dili as we returned to our home in Maubisse this afternoon. Little did we realise that an uninvited guest had been living in our guest room while we were away.

While I was cleaning the guest room, I noticed the cloth covering the printer was missing. Perhaps R had washed it, I thought. When R came into the room, she said she had not washed the cloth but she might know where the cloth was. As she pointed to the top of the wardrobe, something below the cloth moved!

We screamed & ran out of the room, shutting the door behind us. The big movement suggested that it could be a snake.  Our uninvited guest must be feeling very cold from all the rain in a empty house that it carried the cloth from the table up to the top of the wardrobe. After we calmed down, we called M to come & help chase the “creature” out of the house.

When M came & looked at the droppings on the bed, he guessed our uninvited guest could be a laho-boot, meaning RAT! Though I was glad that it’s not a snake but neither was I excited over the fury creature. As M stood on the bed trying to remove the cloth (with a bloom) to see what the “creature” really was, it ran down the wardrobe & out of the room. And yes, it was indeed a big black rat. Startled by this sudden movement, all 3 of us were screaming & before we could calm down, the rat came running back into the room as the doors leading out were closed! We screamed even louder……

As I shone the torchlight on the rat hanging at the side of the wardrobe against the wall, it frozed. M asked me to keep watch on the rat while he discusssed with R how to direct the rat to leave the house. So there I was, standing on the bed, alone in the room with our little guest, staring at each other. I guess we were both cold & frightened. So when M came back into the room after a few minutes, it was a great relief that he started to shoo the rat out with the bloom. It took a while before the rat decided to get out, probably not knowing what to do or where to go. R did a good job in the living room observing how the rat left. We discovered there was a big gap at the pipe area in the toilet, which the landlord was very quick in getting it covered with cement the next day.

When we visited Ibu Leo & family later in the evening, they showed concern by assuring me that the rat will not bite me. To further put me at ease, they gave me a mosquite net to put up around my bed so the rat will not come near me when I am asleep. They also taught us to put salt at the door as rat disliked salt & would not cross over into our rooms.

I had been comforted by the outpour of concern & love. I thank God that He had touched the hearts of these people who did not think twice about living with rats in their ceiling. Yet they recognised the fear we have about rats. I thank these kind souls for being patient & gracious to give us time to adapt to this totally new living  condition, having grown up in a country like Singapore where rats are not common in high rise apartments.

I am still not looking forward to living under the same roof with these little creatures but I trust that God will provide the peace I need to rest & the protection from any disease that these creatures might bring. I believe with God’s help, I will be able to withstand these unfamiliar & challenging conditions to bear good witness and to see things from His perspective.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

                                                                                           – 2 Cor 9:8 (NIV)

Love from Maubisse,

Lydia
